Local photog Erin McCann was running around backstage at Montgomery College’s performing arts center Saturday night when she snapped this photo of young performers waiting for their moment in the spotlight.

“They were being led from a staging area across the hall to another off-stage hall, and then through the door to the stage,” she said of the girls, who were performing a bhangra-based salute to Bollywood. “This was taken right before they went through that door.”

With one click of her camera, McCann captured the apprehension, anxiety and delirium that percolates behind the curtain. She expects to post more backstage pics to her Flickr photostream next week.

Stalking is a misdemeanor crime in Maryland, but stalking autumn leaves is still perfectly legal. That’s good for local photog Ray Fudge, who said he waited and waited and waited for the opportunity to snap this pic outside the Summit Hills apartment complex on East-West Highway.

“I had been watching this group of trees for several days as the leaves changed. I planned to shoot them earlier in the day but the rains kept coming and coming,” Fudge wrote in an email to The Penguin.

As rain clouds finally took off, “the sun dropped below the horizon and the leaves began to glow, almost like flames,” Fudge continued. “I set the camera to underexpose the leaves by about half a stop to give the colors a boost and to hold back a rather bland sky.”

After a little Photoshop action to “fix” the sky, Fudge came up with a radiant (if fleeting) image of autumn at its peak.

Local shutterbug Ray Fudge snapped this autumnal image Saturday afternoon, just as torrential rains gave way to a clear October evening. The scene: outside Summit Hills, a cluster of apartment buildings off 16th Street and East-West Highway.

Get used to the look of raindrops on fallen leaves — NOAA’s weather gurus predict a solid chance of rain through Tuesday night and possibly into Wednesday.

It’s another rainy day in Conwayville, that mythical place where large things are made to look extremely small.

Playing tricks with perspective, local photog (and self-declared mayor of Conwayville) TC Conway shrank the driveway at Discovery Communications into a scale model of itself. The only thing missing is the miniature train. Or maybe a guy stomping around in a Godzilla suit.

Shiny new camera plus Canadian spin master Kid Koala equals gritty black-and-whites that crunch with funky urban grit. Penguin graphic artist Brian Hefele hit Friday night’s performance at Gallery Lounge packing multi-megapixel heat and came up with the shot above.

Shot many photos, but camera not made for those conditions,” Hefele tweeted after the gig. “Will process tomorrow. All will need to be black and white.”

Still, a little grain didn’t wreck Koala’s groove. “Crazy DJing in keeping with the overall club vibe, but he also did performances of ‘Skanky Panky’ and ‘Drunk Trumpet’,” Hefele added. “Also, a pillow fight!”

The South Silver Spring gig was one of Koala’s many stops on his Slew tour.
