On Monday, the Public Broadcasting System announced that “The Antiques Roadshow” will be rolling through Washington, DC, this August. For the uninitiated, the program brings tchotchke collectors out of the woodworks to have their stuff appraised by professional antique dealers. Some of it is crap, some of it is big money, all of it is entertaining.

So what would “Roadshow” pros think of the tiki mugs above? (more…)

While The District’s gay and lesbian community celebrates Tuesday’s baby step towards same-sex marriage, Silver Springers can take comfort in knowing there’s a Drag City in Fenton Village.

But the only T here is steeped in hot water and scented with jasmine. (more…)

Not to be outdone by Hanukkah, the Mormons are throwing their own festival of lights this month at their nearby Kensington temple. Colorful lights lace trees and shrubs throughout the 52-acre campus, their brilliance muted only by the temple’s imposing Art Deco spires. (more…)

The day after Thanksgiving marks the quasi-official start to the holiday shopping season, and according to The Washington Post, plenty of people hit the stores on Black Friday. Sure, people didn’t spend as much as they have in the past, The Post reported, but at least they put in some face time at the local mall.

Or not. This photo, taken by visiting shutterbug Susan Sermoneta, shows downtown Silver Spring’s City Place Mall at 2:40 p.m. on Black Friday. Apparently they’ve decked the mall with boughs of holly, and workers at the Santa display have donned their gay apparel.

But Sermoneta’s title for this photo — “The ‘big’ shopping day?” — suggests slow going inside the mall. That, or a mid-afternoon nap for all those early birds who handled their business at 4:00 a.m.

There’s something about decapitated bodies that grabs the imagination and begs important questions. Like who’s the dude with the cup of soda and camera around his neck? What’s up with the chick in the photo behind him? And where did she get those darling red shoes? (more…)

The end of the world is nigh! Or not. Local photog Tom Barnes snapped this pic of Georgia Avenue’s Crowne Plaza Hotel earlier this month, but it screams Friday the 13th. Or 2012.

It’s unclear how Barnes adjusted the image’s colors to give it that apocalyptic vibe, but it’s his signature style. A quick scan of his other photos is an online tour of the End of Days. Uber-cool.
