The guy who took a bullet outside a City Place gym Monday evening may have been shot during a drug deal, detectives with the third police district announced Tuesday in a press statement.

It’s unclear how detectives arrived at this theory, but they believe the 25-year-old victim, a District resident, was walking outside — not exiting from — the Gold’s Gym at 8661 Colesville Rd just before 6:00 p.m. when his two assailants showed up and capped him.

Previously, police thought the unnamed victim was a gym patron caught in a random mugging. Detectives now think the victim and suspects may have known each other, the press statement added.

Either way, the victim was shot above his left knee. The bullet exited through the other side of his left leg, then hit the middle part of his right leg. He was brought to an unnamed local hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The two perps are still on the loose. The first suspect was a six-foot-tall black guy weighing about 130 pounds, bald but rocking a beard and side burns. He wore a puffy coat, white tee shirt and packed a handgun. The second was a clean-shaven black guy wearing a hat and a gray hooded sweatshirt, and sporting a tear-drop tattoo on his face.

The third district’s investigative section is keeping the crime-tip line open at (301) 565-5835, so holler if you know something. Callers may remain anonymous.

Man shot in attempted robbery outside downtown gym

A 25-year-old man was shot in the leg Monday evening as two guys tried to rob him outside a City Place gym, MoCo police said.

According to a PD press statement, the unnamed victim was exiting the Gold’s Gym at 8661 Colesville Rd before 6:00 p.m. when two men approached him on the sidewalk. They tried to rob the guy, but the victim managed to fight them off.

That’s when the suspects shot him. The bullet entered above the victim’s left knee, exited through the other side, then hit the middle part of his right leg. The guy was brought to an unnamed local hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

The perps fled with none of the victim’s property, Fox-5 News reported.

Meanwhile, officers with the third police district are prowling for the two suspects. One was a six-foot-tall black guy weighing about 130 pounds, bald but rocking a beard and side burns. He wore a puffy coat, white tee shirt and packed a handgun.

The second suspect was a clean-shaven black guy wearing a hat and a gray hooded sweatshirt, and sporting a tear-drop tattoo on his face.

Ervin pitches public-safety plans to council members

MoCo council member Valerie Ervin wants colleagues to consider residents’ public-safety recommendations cooked earlier this year in Silver Spring.

In an Oct 9 letter to the council’s public-safety committee, the District 5 Dem asked that Silver Spring residents receive status updates on crime in and around the central business district. Specifically, the county should set up a community-relations council to stream info between the police and residents. That’s on top of the county’s existing police-district advisory boards.

“Frequent and consistent communication between residents and the police department increases awareness of the community’s needs and facilitates trust between the police and residents,” Ervin wrote.

The letter also asked county officials to evaluate community policing, including the use of neighborhood listservs in crime prevention. Ervin encouraged the PD to work with the area’s civic and homeowners associations, which run a lot of these listservs, to develop neighborhood watch programs.

Ervin’s recommendations were spawned from a public-safety wishlist developed by Safe Silver Spring, a group of Silver Springers focused on keeping crime in check. In a doc that went along with Ervin’s letter, Safe Silver Spring emphasized youth programs and a facility around the central business district — maybe ye olde library on Colesville Road — to give the kids structure. The MoCo police are on the prowl for a dude who tried (keyword: tried) to rob a downtown bank last month.

On the afternoon of Sep 18, the suspect entered the Eagle Bank at 8665 Georgia Ave near Cameron Street, walked up to a teller and demanded cash. But when someone else came into the bank, detectives figured the dude freaked out and bailed without scoring stash. No one was injured, a press release recounted.

That same afternoon, Penguin reader Julianne M snapped a photo of a sign posted on the bank’s front door announcing its closure. Yellow police tape and four cop cars were on the scene, Julianne typed in a quick email to The Penguin.

So who do the police like for a prime suspect? They like this guy: a 5-feet 7-inch, 160-pound, 30-something black guy with a muscular upper body and a mustache and goatee. He wore a black baseball cap and a black tee shirt with “Jive Jungle” printed in white.

Robber knocks over Fenton Village bank

One Georgia Avenue bank was robbed Wednesday afternoon, and now detectives with the MoCo PD and FBI are searching for a suspect, a press release announced.

According to police, this guy walked into the Chevy Chase Bank at 8315 Georgia Ave just before 2:00 p.m., stepped up to a teller and said he was robbing the joint. He didn’t flash a gun, nor did he imply that he had one.

The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, and the perp took off in a small burgundy ride parked on Bonifant Street. No one was injured.

Police described the suspect as a black dude in his late 20s to early 30s, somewhere between 5-feet 8-inches and 5-feet 10-inches tall, and weighing 150 to 170 pounds. He wore a black tee shirt, blue jeans and a black baseball hat.
