It’s time for episode 3 of Silver Spring’s “The Videomakers”. In this installment, brainstorming leads to competitive prescription-drug use. Meanwhile, Lowball Production staffers court a client with a bizarre business idea and a curiously low budget.

Music lovers should check out blues gheetahrist and Friend of The Penguin Jonny Grave and his band The Tombstones at the Quarry House Tavern (8401 Georgia Ave) Friday night. About Jonny: He’s a good guy. He lives in Woodside Park, works in the Ripley District, and can play dirrrrty-ass blues like a mofo.
Don’t know if there’s a cover charge. Don’t really care. All I know is the Penguin newsroom is going to enjoy this tax-deductible “editorial meeting” with fierce gusto and a side of tots.
There’s also some inexpensive stage action going down. Both the Round House Theatre and Montgomery College’s performing arts center host “pay what you can” preview performances of their featured shows. They’re good for impressing first dates and in-laws, and for expanding one’s cultural horizons on the cheap.

Episode 2 of Silver Spring’s “The Videomakers” delves deeper into the unreal world of reality TV. The network is squeezing the production budget at “Top Shots”, so the crew had better hope that the Taser incident won’t cost too much. And that the coffin prop holds together from all the use.
Best line of this episode: “These hamsters had no idea they were part of the machinery of death.”

It’s another rainy day in Conwayville, that mythical place where large things are made to look extremely small.
Playing tricks with perspective, local photog (and self-declared mayor of Conwayville) TC Conway shrank the driveway at Discovery Communications into a scale model of itself. The only thing missing is the miniature train. Or maybe a guy stomping around in a Godzilla suit.

MoCo’s planners propose to throw down a temporary skateboarding spot just north of Silver Spring’s central business district, they announced Friday afternoon.
The “skate spot” will sit in what used to be a tennis court at the Woodside Urban Park on Georgia Avenue and Spring Street, sandwiched between the park’s basketball courts and gymnasium. The 3,000 square-foot spot will have “street-style obstacles” like concrete ledges and embankments for boarders to skim.
“The new skate spot will provide youth in the community with better and enhanced play opportunities,” read a planning department newsletter being snail mailed to area residents.
Preliminary plans for the skate spot are already cooking and will be open to sidewalk shredders by January 2010, the newsletter predicted. The temporary spot could become permanent if residents feel it’s a good fit for the park’s overall renovation. Public meetings will be held on the subject in the next few months, the newsletter read.
A playground near First Avenue is also slated for renovations, planners announced. It’s not known whether that work will close the playground temporarily, or when the work will wrap.

Shiny new camera plus Canadian spin master Kid Koala equals gritty black-and-whites that crunch with funky urban grit. Penguin graphic artist Brian Hefele hit Friday night’s performance at Gallery Lounge packing multi-megapixel heat and came up with the shot above.
“Shot many photos, but camera not made for those conditions,” Hefele tweeted after the gig. “Will process tomorrow. All will need to be black and white.”
Still, a little grain didn’t wreck Koala’s groove. “Crazy DJing in keeping with the overall club vibe, but he also did performances of ‘Skanky Panky’ and ‘Drunk Trumpet’,” Hefele added. “Also, a pillow fight!”
The South Silver Spring gig was one of Koala’s many stops on his Slew tour.
