Not to be outdone by Hanukkah, the Mormons are throwing their own festival of lights this month at their nearby Kensington temple. Colorful lights lace trees and shrubs throughout the 52-acre campus, their brilliance muted only by the temple’s imposing Art Deco spires.

Plenty of festival photos live on the internet, but this one by local photog Kim Baker adds a little extra sparkle to the scene, courtesy of her CrackBerry smart phone. The photo “involves three of my favorite things: my BlackBerry, Christmas lights and photography!” she wrote on her Flickr page.

Add to that the photo’s “bokeh” flavor — the blur of distant holiday lights that composes most of the view, Baker pointed out. The image on the CrackBerry’s screen was not preserved, she told The Penguin.

The Mormon Temple usually has a neat display of nativity sets from around the world in their visitor center, too. The downside of visiting them, though, is that at the end of the display you are funnelled through a room of very nice and very earnest young people who want to convert you.

  2. I made the mistake of following Google Maps’ directions to the temple. Instead of taking the straight line that is Beach Dr/Jones Mill Rd/Stonybrook Dr, Google sent me through the backwoods of Kensington, only to end up lost and confused on Connecticut Ave.

You’d think it would be easier to find that big, glowing building.

Not sure if the spires of the temple would generally be considered “Art Deco”. (Art Deco architecture is a bit of a hobby of mine.)

    Mmm, bokeh!
