There’s something about decapitated bodies that grabs the imagination and begs important questions. Like who’s the dude with the cup of soda and camera around his neck? What’s up with the chick in the photo behind him? And where did she get those darling red shoes?

Maybe photog Max Cook snapped this pic Thursday at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center to challenge viewers’ notions of what should and could be there. Just like surrealist painter Magritte, who veiled his subjects’ faces or just plugged them with Granny Smith apples, perhaps Cook wanted viewers to aim for more than the obvious.

Having screwed with Silver Spring’s collective mind, Cook moved on to photograph Sunday’s Tweed Ride cycling event in The District. As for the chick in those darling red shoes, she and other subjects can be seen in Pyramid Atlantic’s “Portrait 2.0″ exhibit until Dec 5, 2009.

For the record, that dude is local photographer Chris Chen, the red shoes belong to local photographer Betsy Spruill Clarke, and the photo on the wall is by local photographer Josh Yospyn who has an entire series of people missing their heads. :)

And where is my Journalism photog prof so I can tell him that my habit of always cutting off folks’ feet in the frame was an artistic choice?

  3. What a fun pic. Thanks for sharing.

I approve of Max’s artistic choice. The less seen of my face, the better.

You might compromise his superhero identity.

  6. This is such a great shot. Not only for composition but content.

    Chris Chen, you’re got!
