This week, our country honors its veterans and all the sacrifices they’ve made. If it weren’t for those brave men and women, The Penguin wouldn’t be what it is today.
Instead of being a font of free speech, the Penguin newsroom likely would be a propaganda machine for Da Man. Our intern wouldn’t have the opportunity to pursue a higher education, but would be sent to an indoctrination camp for small animals. As for the guys in the mail room, half the shit they pull would land them immediately in a North American gulag.
If you know vets or see them in the neighborhood, tell them, “Thanks!” And if you’re a music-loving patriot, hit Tuesday night’s tribute concert at the Round House Theatre. Proceeds go to hooking up vets with home renovations that make it easier to navigate.

Monday
7:00 p.m. Silver Spring’s citizens advisory board hosts its monthly meeting at the Silver Spring library (8901 Colesville Rd). This free event is open to the public.
Tuesday
10:20 a.m. The county council decides whether to approve the 2009-2011 growth policy, which directs the development of commercial space and housing in the county. This free event takes place inside the council’s office building (100 Maryland Ave, Rockville), third floor, and is open to the public.
7:30 p.m. The nonprofit group Silver Spring Town Center hosts a concert at the Round House Theatre in tribute to the nation’s veterans. Scheduled to perform are blues duo Memphis Gold and Jay Summerour, and blues soloist Jonny Grave. Tickets are $20 each.
Proceeds benefit the nonprofit organization Rebuilding Together, which assists veterans through home renovations.
Wednesday
All day. The county observes Veterans Day. County offices, libraries and courts are closed; parking at county-operated lots, garages and curbside meters is free. However, county-operated liquor stores maintain regular business hours, and mass transit runs on a weekday schedule.
8:00 p.m. The Forum Theatre Co. presents Tony Kushner’s award-winning drama “Angels in America: Perestroika”. This event takes place at the Round House Theatre (8641 Colesville Rd); tickets are $25 each.
Thursday
7:30 p.m. County executive Ike Leggett holds a town-hall meeting at the Takoma Park Middle School (7611 Piney Branch Rd, Takoma Park) until 9:00 p.m. This free event is open to the public.
