A 25-year-old man was shot in the leg Monday evening as two guys tried to rob him outside a City Place gym, MoCo police said.
According to a PD press statement, the unnamed victim was exiting the Gold’s Gym at 8661 Colesville Rd before 6:00 p.m. when two men approached him on the sidewalk. They tried to rob the guy, but the victim managed to fight them off.
That’s when the suspects shot him. The bullet entered above the victim’s left knee, exited through the other side, then hit the middle part of his right leg. The guy was brought to an unnamed local hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.
The perps fled with none of the victim’s property, Fox-5 News reported.
Meanwhile, officers with the third police district are prowling for the two suspects. One was a six-foot-tall black guy weighing about 130 pounds, bald but rocking a beard and side burns. He wore a puffy coat, white tee shirt and packed a handgun.
The second suspect was a clean-shaven black guy wearing a hat and a gray hooded sweatshirt, and sporting a tear-drop tattoo on his face.
Sound like someone you know? Holler at the third district’s investigative section at (301) 565-5835. Callers may remain anonymous.

Alright, people. I don’t want to read any shit about Helter Skelter and race war. Say something mildly intelligent or shut the fuck up. Seriously, kick your shit somewhere else.
And to those regular readers who generally play nice, don’t engage the race baiters. Thank you.
Damn..thats crazy…the first work day of the “get dark early” season, and someone gets shot right on the busy street. Glad he was able to fight off the perps. 6′ + 130lbs = nutrition fail. I hope he recovers quickly!
Jennifer,
You should remove the first comment. There’s no need for that shit.
I am just glad the guy wasn’t killed.
-Evan- (Formerly known as IHateYuppies)
Crazy. As with everyone, I hope he recovers quickly. We live in an urban environment and these things unfortunately happen, though at the height of rush hour it is a little more alarming. While I would like to see more of a police presence in DTSS, especially WALKING a beat, thugs will always exist , regardless of color and how many officers you have out and about.
Have you stopped hating Yuppies Evan???
That Gold’s Gym entrance needs to be opened up to the street more – it is a perfect secluded little area next to a dark alley.
To the other Evan of yuppie hating notoriety – using a last name or initial would be appreciative as not to confuse us.
And I too am relieved that no one was killed.
I was wondering what all that police activity was about.
It is truly shocking that anyone would attempt a robbery at the height of rush hour on such a busy street, and with all the people walking home. Worse that the actually fired a gun; we can all speculate on how horrible the outcome of that could have been.
To all the strident anti-gun control people out there: how would your gun have helped you, or your loved one, if that bullet have gone astray or richocheted and hit you? You would just have been walking up the sidewalk, not knowing anything that was happening up the block, and you would be shot and perhaps even killed, We need gun control in this country.
So…only bad guys should have guns? How does taking away my gun help your loved ones…once again please?
BTW: comment #2 by Jennifer was right on time. Keep calling it like it is.
OK “Evan”. You can have your name back. Evan is my middle name.
Yuppies still suck though. I gotta stop the Hate at some time.
Nobody should have guns. You can quote me on that.
Yuppies/Evan/Coldbliss: good for you giving up the hate.
Thank goodness the man shot will be ok. Why rob someone coming out of a gym? Who brings valuables when they work out? Then again, why rob a mini mart or dry cleaner either.
Coldsore: please define Yuppie. Thanks.
Eric,
You definately, should not have a gun.
I recall seeing a program where a majority of the Israeli citizens carry guns all the time and the crime rate in Israel is much lower than it is in the US.
This is really disturbing — so blatant and senseless. This really sounds like social breakdown. But, that is what happens to a society that loses its middle class.
IHY, I take it that you don’t hate upper-middle-income young people, but you do hate conspicuous consumption. I bet you also hate the sense that people who “work hard and play by the rules” can still wind up falling down, down.
If the middle class continues to dissapear, we will be a society of yuppies and rich people in gated communities — with those of us on the outside scurrying in fear.
@tj: Except for the random bus bombings.
There is no obvious reason for thinking that chaos is just around the corner. Drugs, gangs and unemployment are the more likely culprits. This is not the SIlver Spring you grew up in…wanne see crime drop? Make Maryland a “shall issue” state.
Bringing more guns and bullets into Maryland will make crime drop in the same way that adding more gasoline to a fire will put out the flames.
Roader: site your source.
Gun fanciers don’t say please?
Placation, soothing mollification? Would be interested in your facts tho…
Dogs, please give up. I don’t know who believes the “more guns means less violence” line of thought, but I know it’s not SS.
As for the actual incident, I’m sure anyone who knows the area knows this isn’t indicative of a systematic problem. The one thing I’m worried about is a spike in cop car presence all over DTSS. Get the cops out on foot and bike – it makes no sense to have 3+ cop cars sitting on ellsworth, as if there’s a constant threat of a gang battle breaking out. I’m sure it freaks out the west-MoCo visitors!
Has anyone been to that gun shop on Bonifant? Does anyone know the closest shooting range in the area?
Manners are always appropriate, Dogs.
I’m interested in your sources as well. In the meantime, for facts about gun violence in the United States, this is an excellent resource: http://www.bradycampaign.org/facts/
Gunshop on Bonifant: Atlantic Guns
Shooting range” Gilbert’s (indoor) in Rockville. For outdoor go to Ft Meade Rod and Gun Club. Both on the Web.
Jag: I don’t think you speak for SS.
Dogs, a gun shop is a good place to learn about guns that are for sale, and a shooting range is a good place to learn about how to handle the gun that you purchased. As for objective information on gun violence in the United States, though, they seem of questionable value.
Roader: Agree. By sending me the Brady link, I think you have me confused with someone who advocates gun violence. I don’t. I am in favor of keeping guns away from those who should not have them, and for preserving the ownership rights of those law-abiding citizens who are gun owners. You still ahve not provided the source of the data for your statement “Bringing more guns and bullets into Maryland will make crime drop in the same way that adding more gasoline to a fire will put out the flames.”
@Dogs- Thanks! I think that I’ll check out the gun store thus weekend.
tj: Ask for Dan. MD requires a 7 day waiting period for a purchase. Enjoy!!
Dogs, why would you assume I believe you advocate gun violence? If I thought that, I wouldn’t even bother responding to you. The Brady Center offers facts and references to studies that refute your notion that “right to issue” results in lower crime. I encourage you to spend time on that site and learn for yourself.
You made another assumption: that my advocacy of gun control was the same as advocating “taking away” you gun. I wrote gun “control,” not gun “elimination,” and as a matter of fact, I have far less problem with the ownership of long guns than I do of handguns; the former should be controlled, and the latter should be very strictly controlled.
In the end, even if you were armed with a bazooka, if those robbers had fired an errant bullet in your direction while you were walking up that sidewalk, it would have ruined your day. On the other hand, if those robbers did not have easy access to guns, thanks to the weak gun control laws in this country, chances are that they would not have had a gun to begin with.
http://www.bradycampaign.org
Oh, and Dogs: If “Dan” at the gun shop is your source for information on guns and crime rates, that’s not good enough.
Roader: you made my point. Bad guys don’t need “easy access” to guns. They will get them anyway. I am familiar with the Brady Campaign and have no problem with enacting and enforcing sensible regulations to reduce gun violence, including regulations governing the gun industry. I disagree with your assertion on handguns. I should be ablre to conceal my carry weapon – just like the bad guys. As your “link” points out: gun control laws in this country are not weak, there are just too many loopholes allowing crimanals to possess. Finally: For those of you who are afraid of guns and gun owners, you are missing a fundamental way to connect to the historical character of those who built the United States. . . those who positively recognized “great power” and practiced “great responsibility” in all that they did . . . those who sacrificed and built this nation into what it is because of their character and experience.
Dogs: I did not make your point, but nice try. Your ode to patriotism might sound heroic, but you’ve no facts to support your anti-gun control arguments. Where are they? What are your sources for anything you’ve written besides, 1) a gun shop and 2) a gun range?
You’ll need something better besides assumptions and cliches and self-interested businesses to make a convincing case.
While I appreciate the civil discourse here, I think it’s time we agree to disagree.
Not like we’re talking about the World Series here, where there’s clearly no doubt of which team is better.
Discuss.
Roader: same mysterious lack of facts on your end. I agree with Jennifer. The horse is dead…hope someone is around to protect Mr. Roader if similar circumstances occur…
Sooooo Dogsh*t, (You ridiculed my screen name already)
You write about “great responsibility” shown US gun owners. Switzerland has almost universal gun ownership for adult males but they have a fraction of gun crimes per capita than the US. Why is that? It seems the Swiss show more responsibility as human beings.
This nation was built on guns alright. Guns were used to kill Native Americans so white Americans can seize their land. Guns were used to shoot runaway or rebellious black slaves. Guns were used for an illegal war against Mexico in the 1840s. Guns were used by Union and Confederate soldiers in a senseless slaughter of a massive scale. Guns were used by police and federal troops against labor unions and student protesters. Guns were used by cops against unarmed people of color. Guns are used by angry young men (Columbine and VA Tech) against their innocent peers. We lead the developed world in gun crimes and overall prison incarceration rates.
Yes, guns help shaped the character of this great nation. This is an American tragedy.
Coldsore: Yawn. Move to Europe.
Editor’s note: Play nice. — JD (Nov 3, 2009)
There is something peculiar about this shooting. It seems an odd time and place to be mugging someone. Plus, a 26 year old male coming out of a Golds Gym isn’t what I’d define as a likely victim – unlikely to be caring much cash and wouldn’t appear vulnerable.
The other thing is the tear drop tattoo. This, almost, always signifies the person is a gang member. Yes, most gang members are criminals, but they aren’t morons.
I doubt this was a mugging and, more likely, was a gang issue.
Last post on this topic. Hopefully Jennifer will put up a restaurant review or something similarly diverting.
Jennifer: I agree that Dogs and I won’t agree (hey, we didn’t even get into the issue of how cats are better than dogs), but like baseball teams statistics, the facts of the gun control debate are available and clear.
Dogs: I’m confident in my self-defense skills, thank you very much.
Bubba: I agree with you that there may be more to this story. It takes either true stupidity or strong motivation to try to rob someone on a busy street during rush hour. Someone is odd here.
Even if it IS a gang thing, that doesn’t make it any less alarming. A gun going off aimed by Thug 1 at Thug 2 can still hit innocent bystanders 1, 2 3 and 4. That’s the danger of letting these punks continue to operate on the streets.
Play nice. No poking fun at each other’s screen names.
