Gratuitous Shot

Call it fate or destiny. Around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Discovery HQ staffer and Penguin Twitter buddy @joshourisman peeked out his office window and noticed changes to a Colesville Road storefront.

“Some of the paper covering the windows at the upcoming Flippin’ Pizza has come down!” he tweeted. And he included a photo: a bird’s eye view of what he’d described.

Also around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Penguin editor Jennifer Deseo (read: me) was trudging north on Colesville Road towards Georgia Avenue when she noticed the same thing. That’s when she snapped the photo above, unaware that her Twitter buddy had simultaneously done the same. Freaky, huh?

Workers installing electrical cable at the restaurant said it will open for business next week. Whether that meant Monday morning breakfast or a late dinner Friday night was unclear.

  1. It would have been even more awesome if you were in my picture.

Since this joint won the recent Washingtonian magazine’s Pizza Pool (going up against the likes of 2Amy’s and Ella’s among many others) I have to admit that I’m intrigued as to how good their pie actually is. Admittedly, these pools are little more than a popularity contest and don’t necessarily attest to the quality of the product, but using the old adage “where there’s smoke there’s fire” I figure it’s worth checking out.

Btw, any word yet on when Pacci’s Pizza on Georgia Ave (next to the “World Building”) is going to open?

  3. Construction at Pacci’s is moving along, but I’d give it at least another month. If they decide to wait for the liquor license, add a year or two to that opening.

Will Flippin’ Pizza have a “soft” opening so invited customers can check it out, then a “grand opening” for everyone later? I have seen other restaurants do that.

When Pacci’s opens, I hope peds will still be able to walk through the alley beside it. The corner of Sligo & Ga. is a drag, sidewalk is too narrow.

  5. Woodsider says:

From everything I’ve hear, Pacci’s sounds like it’s going to be an great place not only for fantastic pizza, but to just hang out and have a drink. So few places like that in Silver Spring.

Looked like staff training at Flippin’ today when I walked by on way to lunch at Thai Flavor (shill alert – best Thai in downtown SS by far).

  7. JG says:

Damn – sounds like they’ll open just in time for the World Series to be over.
