The Early Bird

This morning, the Penguin intern waddled out of his kennel and saw his shadow on the newsroom floor. Our weather team hasn’t deciphered the significance of this yet, and unraveling this mystery might require a trip to Caribou Coffee to eavesdrop on NOAA weather gurus.

Meanwhile, the Penguin tech crew is reading this shadow thing as an omen on some of the technological tweaks performed Sunday. This better not mean six more weeks of “under construction” and “pardon the disruption” bullshit. If I wanted that, I’d ride the Red Line more often.

While we untangle this Gordian knot, take a peek at what’s cooking this week:

Monday

7:00 p.m. Silver Spring’s neighborhoods committee holds its monthly meeting at the Silver Spring regional center (8435 Georgia Ave). This free event is open to the public.

Tuesday

7:00 p.m. Docs In Progress (8700 First Ave) hosts a screening of the documentary “The Power of Forgiveness” (2008), followed by discussion with co-producer Dan Juday. Tickets are $20 each. Seating is limited, so reservations are highly recommended. Call (301) 789-2797 for more information.

Wednesday

7:30 p.m. Silver Spring’s commercial and economic development committee holds its monthly meeting at the Silver Spring regional center (8435 Georgia Ave). This free event is open to the public.

Thursday

2:00 p.m. The county council’s human services and education committees receive an update on renovations at the Old Blair auditorium. This free event takes place at the county council’s office building (100 Maryland Ave, Rockville), seventh floor, and is open to the public.

If you miss them this morning at Caribou, try happy hour at McGinty’s or the Quarry House. They might be chattier after a few beers, too.

  2. Kathy J says:

Silver Spring Garden Club meets tonight 8pm at Brookside – free and open to the public – tonight’s expert speaker on Dahlias.

  3. CES in Silver Spring says:

I feel like the Penguin is turning into a blog about a blog: Two paragraphs on what’s going on with the interns at Penguin HQ, *then* information about what’s happening in SS *after the jump*?! I’m not a fan.

Editor’s note: Thanks for your input, CES.

Admittedly, The Penguin’s recent content has been on the light side — just no news to report. That means Early Bird and This Weekend posts, in which I recount the goings on at Penguin HQ, dominate the content. However, there is more substantive news coming up that will dilute the blog posts about the blog.

Hang in there! — JD (Oct 19, 2009)

    1. CES: chill out

    2. Does anyone know when that Flippin’ Pizza on Colesville is supposed to open? My hopes aren’t that high, but I would love for there to be a decent pizza place that delivers in our area.

What’s wrong with a blog about a blog?

  6. I’ve changed the Penguin’s layout (in case you haven’t noticed). Please leave questions, comments, recommendations and whatever here. Thanks!

  7. Lucy Proctor says:

Hey Jen, on the home page where we see the week’s story summary and there is an icon to get you to a particular story’s comment section, why does it lead you to the middle of the story, not the comment section?

  8. Thanks for the info, Lucy. The links appear to work fine in Google Chrome, but I’ll try them out later in Internet Explorer.

If anyone rocks Safari or Firefox, I’d appreciate it if they would test the links on those browsers.

Update: All is NOT cool with Internet Explorer. Anyone having the same issue as Lucy? Any luck with Safari or Firefox?

  9. Laura says:

Yeah, I agree with CES. Post the useful stuff first please!

And who is this Penguin Intern I’m always hearing about? Is it a dog, penguin, or woodchuck? I gotta say…I’m a bit confused.

  10. Lucy Proctor says:

Yey! I’m cool too now! links are totally operational as of today. Go Jen!
