Shiny new camera plus Canadian spin master Kid Koala equals gritty black-and-whites that crunch with funky urban grit. Penguin graphic artist Brian Hefele hit Friday night’s performance at Gallery Lounge packing multi-megapixel heat and came up with the shot above.
“Shot many photos, but camera not made for those conditions,” Hefele tweeted after the gig. “Will process tomorrow. All will need to be black and white.”
Still, a little grain didn’t wreck Koala’s groove. “Crazy DJing in keeping with the overall club vibe, but he also did performances of ‘Skanky Panky’ and ‘Drunk Trumpet’,” Hefele added. “Also, a pillow fight!”
The South Silver Spring gig was one of Koala’s many stops on his Slew tour.

Boxed wines and rosés are back in vogue. Just ask The Penguin's sommeliers.
Bleh, I thought I dropped a comment here yesterday, but I think my modem ate it.
Anyway, thanks! The show truly was awesome. He tends to play smaller places rather than big clubs, so it’s rather lucky to have him pop up…!
What a night! This guy opened for radio head on their last tour and here he was in silver spring! I hope more moco people come out and support future events like this. We were far outweighed by folks from dc and va. Why?
Deyv, yeah I was pretty shocked by the noise when he called out for VA! Seemed like DC & MD were about 30%, VA 70!
