This Weekend

It’s going to be another busy weekend for Penguin staffers. Between this, that and the other thing, I don’t know when the mailroom guys are going to break for donuts.

Those dudes must plow through emailed entries to our wine-tasting drawing. For those who haven’t gotten their shit together on this, here’s the deal:

The Penguin is giving away a pair of tickets to “Drink Local”, a wine-tasting event and seminar celebrating Maryland and Virginia vintners. Penguin sponsor GiraMondo Wine Adventures is throwing the gig to benefit Marylanders for Better Beer and Wine Laws, who support those elusive direct-to-consumer wine shipments. The party kicks it Thursday, Oct 8, at Dupont Circle’s Whittemore House.

If you want in on this very cool Penguin drawing, send your full name and a working email address to:

wine@silverspringpenguin.com

Legal blah blah blah: No purchase is necessary to enter the drawing. This contest closes at midnight this Sunday, Oct 4, 2009, so get on it. Only one entry per person. One winner will be selected randomly and announced Monday, Oct 5, 2009, to receive two tix to the event. The winner and his/her guest must be at least 21 years of age and flash convincing ID to attend this event. The tickets are non-transferable.

Concerned about handing out your email address? Read The Penguin’s privacy statement and chill.

Once you’ve thrown your name in the hat, check out this weekend’s other events:

Sunday is the first concert of the 2009-10 season for the Piano Society of Greater Washington. Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 3:00 p.m., at Calvary Lutheran Church, 9545 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.

This concert features works by Bach, Rachmaninov, Schubert, and Schumann.

This is a benefit concert in honor of the founder, Alice Stark-Garofano, who passed away September 7 after a long, painful battle with breast cancer. All contributions benefit a special fund that helps uninsured and underinsured cancer patients in our local area to pay for things they could not otherwise pay for–such as transportation to radiation and chemo appointments; medications not covered; and even rent. This fund is administered by the nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization Critters for the Cure.
