Library bridge comes up lame in committee vote

ROCKVILLE — Members of two county council committees voted down the possibility of building a footbridge between Silver Spring’s new library and the Wayne Avenue garage.

If the issue is accessibility for disabled bookworms, then find a cheaper way to do it, members of the human services and economic development committees charged Tuesday afternoon. (more…)

A bicycle and pedestrian trail from downtown Silver Spring to Union Station in The District should be included in the county’s capital improvement budget for road and building construction, Silver Spring’s transportation committee argued recently.

Architects pitch outdoor stairway to new library

Architects have bounced a few ideas around as to how people will reach the new library’s third-floor entrance: through a footbridge, up an escalator, via elevator only, whatever.

Now they’ve come up with this idea: a staircase that hangs along the building’s exterior. (more…)

Crime rates in third district drop from last year

Criminal craziness in the third police district declined in the first three months of 2009, compared with the same time last year, according to numbers published last week by the MoCo police department.

The largest percentage drop was in the district’s murder rate. Last year, one person was murdered between January and March. Compare that with a big, fat zero murders that went down between the same months this year. That’s a 100-percent decrease. (more…)

Red Line service to spiral into new circle of hell

Metro’s Red Line got the green light to roll through Takoma station Sunday, but WMATA warned of further delays and fewer trains during rush hour, at least until Thursday.

Commuters can add 30 minutes or more to their rush-hour rides, WMATA wrote in a press statement. (more…)

The Early Bird

A recent Washington Post article posed this question: Is Barack Obama just the US president or another District resident? Unlike his predecessor, Obama and his family have made it a point to eat out on the town like locals, whether that’s scoring burgers and peanuts at Five Guys or half smokes at Ben’s Chili Bowl.
