If your home has a pool or yard, or if you have access to a car, I suggest you take full advantage of those comforts — because ain’t nobody making it into or out of The District on the Red Line this weekend. Prepare to weep:
Throughout the weekend
Starting Saturday morning, Red Line trains operate every 17 minutes between the Glenmont and Shady Grove stations. Also, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Red Line trains operate between the Silver Spring and Farragut North stations only. These delays are in addition to the slower speeds resulting from last month’s crash.
Meanwhile, there are a few things in Silver Spring to occupy your time:
Thursday
7:00 p.m. The David Bach Consort performs world jazz in a free outdoor concert on Silver Plaza (Ellsworth Dr near Georgia Ave). This event is part of the Silver Spring Regional Center’s summer concert series.
7:00 p.m. Screenprint artist Sha Grogan-Brown discusses his series of mini-books, images of cellular structures, and creative story telling about gender identity. This free event takes place at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (8230 Georgia Ave) and is open to the public.
Friday
6:30 p.m. The Old School Singers perform rhythm and blues in a free outdoor concert on Silver Plaza (Ellsworth Dr near Georgia Ave). This event is part of Downtown Silver Spring’s summer concert series.
8:00 p.m. The Silver Spring Stage (10145 Colesville Rd) performs Agatha Christie’s “The Mousetrap”. Tickets are $13 to $18 each.
Saturday
9:00 a.m. Freshfarm Markets holds its weekly farmers market on Ellsworth Drive, between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street, until 1:00 p.m. There is no admission fee.
10:30 a.m. Veteran dog trainer Mary Sullivan offers advice on dog training, behavior modification, socialization, and responsible pet ownership. This free event takes place at Living Ruff pet-supply store (8517 Georgia Ave) until 12:30 p.m.
6:30 p.m. Jazz fusion artist Scott Paddock performs a free outdoor concert on Silver Plaza (Ellsworth Dr near Georgia Ave). This event is part of Downtown Silver Spring’s summer concert series.

Ha, that’s nothing. Be prepared to REALLY weep: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/09/AR2009070902967.html
Granted track work will not happen on the weekend, but 48 months of single tracking after 8pm Sunday-Thurs for FOUR YEARS. That is four years of metro being absolute hell past 8pm 5 nights a week. My days of going to Nationals games during the week are over. Crappy team plus hellish delays is so not worth it.
This is a great time to rediscover the bus. Went to a party last Sunday in Adams Morgan, took S buses there and back, piece of cake. WMATA’s Web site has a “bus only” option. In addition to Metrobus, it covers RideOn, Prince George’s The Bus (which alas, has little weekend service) and the various bus outfits in Va. However, I am not sure that it contains info for The Circulator bus in DC.
