This weekend is all about dogs, cats and art — three subjects of which I know nothing.
I mean, I know what dogs and cats are. They’re furry creatures that bark and/or meow, much like the Penguin intern does when he’s hungry or needs to pee. And art is totally subjective, which automatically gets me off the hook.
So if you like puppies, kittens, art and whatever, you’ll enjoy this weekend in Silver Spring. At least I know that much.
Thursday
7:00 p.m. The AFI Silver Theatre (8633 Colesville Rd) hosts the metro-area debut of the documentary film “Beautiful Losers” in a special screening to benefit the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center. The $50 admission includes the screening, a silent art auction, and a post-screening reception.
Friday
6:30 p.m. Kefa Cafe’s Space 7:10 (963 Bonifant St) hosts a reception for photographer Camellia Termini, whose portraits are on display at the gallery until Jul 24, 2009. This event is free and open to the public.
Saturday
9:00 a.m. The Washington Area Bicyclists Association holds a bike and gear swap until 1:00 p.m. at The Bicycle Place (8313 Grubb Rd). Those who sell are asked to donate 10 percent of receipts to the association, or to donate unsold items to the nonprofit group Bikes for the World.
9:00 a.m. Freshfarm Markets holds its weekly farmers market on Ellsworth Drive, between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street, until 1:00 p.m. There is no admission fee.
10.00 a.m. Kefa Cafe (963 Bonifant St) hosts a reception for artist Joel Bergner, who painted the “Global Refugee” mural outside the Fenton Village coffee house. This free event is open to the public and runs until noon.
12:00 p.m. The Washington Animal Rescue League makes abandoned cats available for adoption at Living Ruff pet-supply shop (8517 Georgia Ave). There is no admission fee.
Sunday
3:00 p.m. McGinty’s Public House (911 Ellsworth Dr), along with Living Ruff pet-supply shop, host a fundraiser until 5:00 p.m. for Canine Companions for Independence, an organization that provides free companion animals to people with disabilities. There is a $10 cover charge for this event.
