The Early Bird

In case it isn’t painfully obvious, Penguins like snow — not so much the Washington ice, but definitely snow.

That’s why The Penguin newsroom flies (figuratively) into hysterics when NOAA’s weather gurus predict a fresh coat of powder for downtown Silver Spring. It means belly sliding down the hallways of Penguin corporate headquarters, and potato chips and Girl Scout cookies for lunch.

It also means extra-dirty margaritas from the guys in The Penguin mailroom, and a good tummy rub for our Penguin intern, who accurately predicted six more weeks of winter in February. Not a bad way to start the week.

Hope yours goes just as smoothly.

Monday

All day. In case of snowpocalypse, check with the county’s website for school closures, canceled civic meetings and traffic delays. The feds have something similar set up for its employees.

Tuesday

1:00 p.m. The state senate’s judicial proceedings committee and the house of delegates’ judiciary committee tap separate bills that would keep the PD from investigating organizations without solid proof of criminal deeds.

This one-two punch drops on the senate’s office building (11 Bladen St, Annapolis) and the house’s office building (6 Bladen St, Annapolis), respectively. Both are open to the public.

Wednesday

1:00 p.m. The state senate’s judicial proceedings committee get into a bill that would quash discrimination at work, at home, and at public accommodations based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The free gab hits the state senate’s office building (11 Bladen St, Annapolis) and is open to the public.

7:00 p.m. Silver Spring’s African-American book group kicks back with Helene Cooper’s “The House at Sugar Beach”. Score a copy of the book at the library’s circulation desk, then hit this free gig at the Silver Spring library (8901 Colesville Rd). It’s open to the public.
