Once again, the guys in the mailroom are charged with organizing The Penguin’s New Year’s Eve party. Given current economic conditions, I expect the drinks to be diluted beyond recognition. Still, the guys always manage to pull off a raucous gig.
Hope you’re holiday is just as fun!
Thursday
All day. Montgomery County gets the New Year cooking by closing its offices, libraries and courts. And don’t count on those county-owned liquor depots to be open, either. On the bright side, designated drivers can park at county-owned lots, garages and curbside meters for free. Or you can hit mass transit, which runs on a Sunday schedule.
And if you’re shitfaced beyond recognition, SoberRide will pour you into a cab and get you home for free (up to a $50 fare). Set (800) 200-8294 into your speed dial, or #8294 (TAXI) if you’re rocking an iPhone. Just read the fine print before strapping on the beer goggles.

Boxed wines and rosés are back in vogue. Just ask The Penguin's sommeliers.
True Silver Springers will be at the Flaming Croquet Ball.
A “First Night” was held in Silver Spring in the mid-1990s. It was wonderful. Does anyone else recall it? Any chance such an event could occur in the future?
The Silver Spring Historical Society archives houses all of the newspaper clippings and product ephemera related to the “First Night” events that took place in the 20th century.
Yes, they were wonderful.
Imagine my surprise when I went to the Montgomery Cinema and Drafthouse web site and was greeted by a statement from the owners saying that they were forced to close! (http://www.montgomerydrafthouse.com/) I was really looking forward to going there this weekend! Too bad!
Luv – yes, I recall the First Nights her – and that they got moved to MoCo Fairgrounds in G-burg then peterd out and died. The family-friendly First Night MoCo WAS resurrected last night at Brookside Gardens in Wheaton. It was fun – but attendance was not what it should have been due to the frigid high winds. Which, as I recall, was always a down-point to the old SS first nights and keot many away — freezing rain was regular occurence as was being chilled to the bone from arctic winds trying. I recall trying to huddle in tents and running between church basements to other venues as fast as we could move. Still, it’d be nice if they bring it back here once the new community center and library are done. The best part of a past SS first night that I recall was the laser show and fireworks on the big wall at City Place.
