On Wednesday night, the US Senate agreed to hook up Wall Street with that fat $700 billion bailout. Personally, I’ve never had occassion to count that high, but I imagine $700 billion can score a lot of cool stuff. Here’s how The Penguin newsroom would spend it:
- New MacBooks and iPod Touches for everyone. However, staffers would be responsible for their own iTunes tabs.
- Lots and lots of mini Snickers bars, plus a Mountain Dew dispenser for the guys in the mailroom.
- Fresh, potable water for the cooler.
- Salaries for everyone, maybe even a living wage.
And most importantly, a $699 billion diamond-encrusted parachute for me. Yeah, that’s a soft landing!

Friday
8:00 p.m. The Silver Spring Stage (10145 Colesville Rd) presents the Pulitzer prize-winning play “Dinner With Friends”. Tickets are $15 to $18 each.
10:00 p.m. Event producer 88 rolls out “Loda”, a music-and-multimedia event, at Gallery Lounge (1115 East-West Hwy). Hit the bouncer with $10, convincing ID and a smile.
Saturday
9:00 a.m. Freshfarm holds its weekly farmers market on Ellsworth Drive, between Fenton Street and Georgia Avenue. There is no admission fee.
10:00 a.m. Members of the Silver Spring Historical Society lead a 90-minute walking tour down Georgia Avenue. Hook up at the B&O rail station (8100 Georgia Ave) with $5 for your guide.
7:00 p.m. Maryland’s Terps unleash hell on Virginia’s Cavaliers. Make the schlep to Charlottesville, or tap into your neighbor’s ESPN-U and enjoy the destruction from home.

Sunday
1:00 p.m. The Skins make Donovan McNabb and the rest of the Philadelphia Eagles regret the day they were born. Hit that Amtrak train to Philly for a cheesesteak, or drop Domino’s a line and tune into Fox.
2:00 p.m. The Silver Spring Stage (10145 Colesville Rd) presents the Pulitzer prize-winning play “Dinner With Friends”. Tickets are $13 to $15 each.
