This Weekend

By Jennifer Deseo | Sep 18, 2008

So here’s how The Penguin staff will attack this weekend. The guys in the mailroom will probably keep a low profile, pending exoneration by a jury of their peers. The legal staff will seek loopholes to the endangered-species act.

And I’m going to soak my hands in warm water and epsom salts after Twittering (tweeting, actually) four hours of county council discussions Thursday morning. Maybe catch a “Law and Order” marathon on cable. Order pizza.

Here’s what you can check out this weekend:

Friday

5:30 p.m. Performers Mr Citizen and Friends kick it at South Silver Spring’s Arts Alley (8030 Georgia Ave). The outdoor gig is part of the weekly Arts Alley Fridays series of free performances.

8:30 p.m. The Sonic Circuits Festival of Experimental Music holds a fund-raising concert, featuring performers Blue Sausage Infant, Kuschty Rye Ergot, Corpus Callosum, True Womanhood, and Read Underwater. The sounds go down at Jackie’s (8081 Georgia Ave) for $6 per seat.

Saturday

9:00 a.m. Freshfarm holds its weekly farmers market on Ellsworth Drive, between Fenton Street and Georgia Avenue. There is no admission fee.

9:30 a.m. Team Penguin (read: me) gets to stepping for the National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk. Hit it on Ellsworth Drive between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street, in the Downtown Silver Spring shopping center. Better yet, lace up your kicks and get to walking, or drop some coin in Team Penguin’s cup. Click here for details.

1:00 p.m. The Terps look to whoop Eastern Michigan ass when they take on the Eagles in College Park. Hit the game for real, or catch it on the ESPN 360 webcast.

3:00 p.m. The Downtown Silver Spring shopping center unveils its “very important pet” (VIP) park with giveaways, demonstrations and McGruff the Crime Dog. Walk Fido around Silver Plaza (The Fountain) and take in the free festivities.

7:00 p.m. Brainiacs at Montgomery College’s planetarium (7651 Fenton St) break down the ancient Mayan calendar, and how it kicked ass almost 700 years before Europeans knew one day from the next. This event is free and open to the public.

Sunday

1:00 p.m. The Skins take a swing at the 2-0 Cardinals at FedEx Field. Do yourself a favor, keep your money and just watch it on Fox.
