This weekend is all about work, work, work for The Penguin newsroom. First, the annual jazz fest promises to eat Saturday afternoon and evening, leaving Penguin photog Ron Pace a lot of ground to cover. Second, the guys in The Penguin mailroom are on a mission to nail our ever-elusive intern, last seen clogging traffic on Georgia Avenue.
Meanwhile, I’ll be at the annual Online News Association conference in The District. With luck, I’ll steal some slick ideas from those dudes at The Washington Post and The New York Times. If not, at least I’ll get a cool tote bag and a boxed lunch.
For those of you who actually get weekends off, here’s what you can look forward to:
Thursday
8:00 p.m. The Open Circle theater company presents “Story Theatre”, a new spin on old tales. The gig rocks the Roundhouse Theater (8641 Colesville Rd) and costs $15 per seat. Score a break when you flash convincing military, student or senior ID.
Friday
6:30 p.m. Kefa Cafe (963 Bonifant St) holds a reception for artist Joanna Axtmann. The mixed media is free. The chocolate cake on your plate will cost you.
8:00 p.m. The Open Circle theater company presents “Story Theatre”, a new spin on old tales. The gig rocks the Roundhouse Theater (8641 Colesville Rd) and costs $25 per seat. Score a break when you flash convincing military, student or senior ID.
10:00 p.m. Event producer 88 hits South Silver Spring with “Loda”, a music-and-multimedia event, at Gallery Lounge (1115 East-West Hwy). Flash $10 and convincing ID at the door.

12:00 p.m. The Terps take on California’s Golden Bears in College Park. Leave Thursday night to beat the traffic on Route 1, or relax by the warm glow of ESPN.
4:00 p.m. Silver Spring drops its annual jazz festival in the Lee parking lot (behind 8601 Georgia Ave). The free party rolls all damned day with singer Gail Shipp, Latin jazz band Samambaia, sax man Yaron Elyashiv, keyboardist Marcus Johnson and the headlining Mingus Big Band. Tailgate early for the best seats.
