Suspected bank robber busts self

A man who may have knocked over two area banks last week turned himself into police Sunday, the PD says.

Bobby James Ransom II, of no fixed address, is suspected of hitting downtown’s M&T Bank (8737 Colesville Rd) Wednesday afternoon. In that incident, a black man his late 20s demanded cash from bank employees. He didn’t flash any steel or imply that he was packing, according to a PD press statement.

It’s unclear if the guy, who rocked dreadlocks and a white tee shirt reading “So fresh”, actually got any money. But he did take off on foot; no one was injured.

Then on Friday morning, a similar-looking dude knocked over the BB&T Bank (11501 Georgia Ave) in Wheaton. In that incident, the male suspect slipped a note demanding money to one teller; again, no weapon was seen or implied. The guy ran off after scoring an undisclosed amount of cash; no one was injured.

By Friday afternoon, the MoCo PD and the FBI were all over the case. Security-cam shots of the suspect (above) were released to everyone and their brother, and by Sunday, 29-year-old Ransom gave himself up to second-district cops.

Ransom is currently locked up without bond at the county joint in Rockville.

  1. Terry in Silver Spring says:

Why would the teller give him money if he didn’t have a weapon and the teller was behind glass? Is it some kind of policy to protect the other customers, maybe?

  2. jag says:

I imagine it’s the policy of just about any bank (or retailer for that matter) to hand over anything that is demanded. They’re insured for that and even if they weren’t the negative PR of someone being hurt in a BB&T is 1000x more costly than the 5k that was probably handed over.

You really should have used the photo with his sweet air freshener t-shirt. Where do I get me one of those?

  4. Steve & Barry’s?

You’re right, that photo is a clearer image of the suspect. But then I would have had no excuse for linking to the Outkast video. Still looking for a reason to link to 50 Cent’s “Outta Control”.
