This week, county bean counters put downtown Silver Spring’s big public projects through the wringer. The transit center, the civic building, the new library — it all hits the fan. Even the music hall gets some action with the planning board.

Monday
9:00 a.m. The county council’s transportation, energy and environment committee hear from Pepco on the electric company’s reliability, the rising cost of turning on the lights, and beating back climate change. The inquisition rocks the council’s office building (100 Maryland Ave, Rockville), as well as the county’s website as streaming video.
2:30 p.m. The county council’s economic development committee looks at affordable housing, and whether there’s enough of it. The deal goes down at the county council office building (100 Maryland Ave, Rockville) and is open to the public.
7:00 p.m.Silver Spring’s citizens advisory board holds its monthly meeting at the Long Branch Community Center (8700 Piney Branch Rd). The gig is free and open to the public.
Tuesday
1:30 p.m. The county council holds a public hearing on whether commercial zones near transit hubs can add housing to the mix. Hit it at the council’s office building (100 Maryland Ave, Rockville). It’s open to the public.
1:30 p.m. The county council holds a public hearing on a $16.7 million appropriation towards construction of Silver Spring’s transit center. Make it a deuce at the county council office building (100 Maryland Ave, Rockville).
1:30 p.m. The county council holds a public hearing on a $2.5 million appropriation towards construction of Silver Spring’s civic center. Go for three at the council’s office building (100 Maryland Ave, Rockville).
7:00 p.m.The county’s libraries department wants to hear what the public has to say on Silver Spring’s future library. Share your thoughts, dreams and rough sketches at the hood’s existing library (8901 Colesville Rd). It’s open to the public.
Wednesday
7:30 p.m.Silver Spring’s commercial and economic development committee does its monthly thang at the Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave). This event is free and open to the public.
Thursday
2:00 p.m. The county’s planning board mulls over a proposed zoning change that would allow an arts and entertainment venue to satisfy a development’s required public-use space. The squawk gets cooking at MNCPPC headquarters (8787 Georgia Ave) and is open to the public.
3:30 p.m.Silver Spring’s urban-district advisory committee holds its monthly meeting at Discovery Communications (1 Discovery Pl). The meeting is free and open to the public.
