This Weekend

Look out, people. The Washington City Paper and Pyramid Atlantic are about to get crafty on your ass.

At last, the Crafty Bastards art fair hits Pyramid Atlantic with all kinds of cool things that you don’t really need but absolutely must have. It’s been five years in the running, but this is the first time The Washington City Paper has rolled it through Silver Spring.

On my list of stuff to buy, portraits of Jim and Kevin from Elloh’s “The Office” collection, plus Michael Brown’s Bette Boop doll doing El Dia de los Muertos. Gotta have it.

Thursday

7:00 p.m. The Caribbean band Jambulay performs a free concert on Ellsworth Drive near Georgia Avenue. This gig is part of the Silver Spring Swings weekly concert series and is open to the public.

8:00 p.m. The Spooky Action Theater Co. rolls out the dark comedy “The Marriage of Bette and Boo” at Montgomery College’s Black Box Theatre (Philadelphia at Chicago Aves, Takoma Park). Tickets are $10 each ($5 for students).

Friday

5:30 p.m. Blues band The Wayward Street Players performs at South Silver Spring’s Arts Alley (8030 Georgia Ave). This gig is part of the weekly Arts Alley Fridays series of free performances.

8:00 p.m. The Spooky Action Theater Co. rolls out the dark comedy “The Marriage of Bette and Boo” at Montgomery College’s Black Box Theatre (Philadelphia at Chicago Aves, Takoma Park). Tickets are $10 each ($5 for students).

Saturday

9:00 a.m. Freshfarm holds its weekly farmers market on Ellsworth Drive, between Fenton Street and Georgia Avenue. There is no admission fee.

10:00 a.m. Regional artists sell their wares at the Crafty Bastards arts fair. This event takes place outside the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (8230 Georgia Ave) until 5:00 p.m. There is no admission fee.

Step into the art center for quickie workshops in silk-screening, book construction and letterpress printing. Five bucks gets you enrolled.

12:00 noon. The Gateway Heliport Gallery (8001 Kennett St) screens three locally produced documentaries: “Dance Party: The TeenArama Story”, Silver Spring: The Story of an American Suburb” and “The Milt Grant Show”. This free event is part of the annual Heritage Montgomery celebration and is open to the public.

6:30 p.m. Party band Doctor’s Orders performs a free concert on Ellsworth Drive near Georgia Avenue. This event is part of Downtown Silver Spring’s weekly concert series and is open to the public.

Sunday

10:00 a.m. If you can walk a straight line without stumbling, you’re clean enough to donate at Impact Silver Spring’s blood drive (501 Sligo Ave). The bloodletting runs until 3:00 p.m.

12 noon. The Sheryl Sears Trio performs acoustic jazz at the Gateway Heliport Gallery (8001 Kennett St). This free performance is part of the annual Heritage Montgomery celebration and is open to the public.
