Dear Penguin: How does one get a “Friend of The Penguin” card? I read about it on this page but it doesn’t tell us how to get the card, just the benefits of having one. Sounds like a good deal. — Trekkie

Dear Trekkie

Thanks for your question. Just your luck, The Penguin street team (read: me) unleashed a bunch of cards on downtown Silver Spring just the other day.

For the uninitiated, the “Friend of The Penguin” card works like this: Flash it at participating restaurants. Save coin — about 10 percent. The card is reusable, so flash it all summer long.

Easy, right?

Here comes the fine print: Offer does not apply to alcoholic beverages, admission fees, gratuities or other goods and services. Discount cannot be combined with any other special offer. Some restrictions apply. Visit this page for details. Card must be presented before ordering. Offer expires September 1, 2008.

With that said, here’s where you can pick up your very own “Friend of The Penguin” card:

  • Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave) — With any luck, you can find the Penguin card holder here before the powers that be toss it out. Don’t see it? Maybe the receptionist will be nice enough to dig it out of the trash for you.
  • Mayorga Coffee Factory (8040 Georgia Ave) — A card holder is posted on the bulletin board. The people at the register can also hook you up.
  • Raphael’s Barber Shop (8722 Georgia Ave) — Find the card holder on the center coffee table. While you’re there, score the best damned haircut in downtown Silver Spring.
  • Pacers Running Shop (8535 Fenton St) — A card holder has been set on a short shelf near the entrance to the fitting rooms.
  • Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (8230 Georgia Ave) — No card holder, but a small stack of cards are set by the receptionist’s desk in the second-floor gallery.
  • Georgian Towers apartments (8750 Georgia Ave) — Hit the card holder on the security desk at the Georgia Avenue entrance.
  • Twin Towers apartments (1110 Fidler Ln) — Card holders kick it on side tables outside each of the two mail rooms.

My next stop will probably be The Blairs, and I hope to sneak into the Silverton’s lobby soon. This may require some black-ops ninja work, so please be patient.

If anyone knows where else I can leave the cards, holler back. Also, if you’d like some cards sent to your downtown office for you and your co-workers, hit me at info@silverspringpenguin.com with your snail-mail address and the number of cards.

Flash that card with pride, Trekkie!
