Local Licks: Lisa Jaeggi
Singer and Silver Spring ex-pat Lisa Jaeggi bares an old, well-worn soul with every sweet note.
She’s the antidote to Amy Winehouse’s hell-bent, strung-out-on-coke brand of old soul (not that there isn’t entertainment value in that train wreck). Where Winehouse uses her talent to regurgitate the Rat Pack era, Jaeggi wraps her gutsy voice and warm acoustic sound around the listener like a cozy fleece blanket.
In “Menlike Gods” (above) and “Empirical Science”, Jaeggi uses words to illustrate physical details, and glowing “Rubber Soul” sounds to weave emotional details. It’s like Suzanne Vega meets Ricky Lee Jones and Lauryn Hill. But in “Oh Lady, You Shot Me” (below), Jaeggi channels Bob Marley’s story-telling skills and applies them to an un-reggae but no less powerful song.
Get a hit of Jaeggi’s tunes from her MySpace page or her YouTube video collection, then catch her live at The Black Cat (1811 14th St NW, The District) on Sunday, May 4. Five bucks gets you through the door.
