The Silver Spring Penguin

Move over, Washington Nationals. There’s a new team in town — The Silver Spring Penguins — and they are gonna tear you up. It’s what they do.

The rookie Penguin team (sponsored by The Penguin newsroom staff) plays in the Takoma Park-Silver Spring baseball league. And when I say rookie, I mean rookie — a pack of 6- and 7-year-olds who have never even played teeball.

But what they lack in technical ability, they make up for in heart, tenacity and an insatiable appetite for pizza. Spring training starts this Sunday.

Thursday

6:00 p.m. Silver Spring Town Center, Inc., hosts an informal community conversation on plans for downtown’s future civic building. This free event takes place at the Mayorga Coffee Factory (8040 Georgia Ave) and is open to the public.

8:00 p.m. The Dog and Pony theatre ensemble performs William Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline” at the Round House Theatre (8641 Colesville Rd). Tickets are $15 each.

8:00 p.m. Troika Theater performs Bernard Pomerance’s “The Elephant Man” at the Back Room at Jackie’s (8081 Georgia Ave). Tickets are $18.50 each (excluding food and drinks).

6:00 p.m. Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (8230 Georgia Ave) hosts a wine tasting and talk with art collector Philippa Hughes, of the Pink Line Project. This event is free and open to single adults.

8:00 p.m. The Silver Spring Stage (10145 Colesville Rd) presents the comedy “Communicating Doors”. Tickets are $15 to $18 each.

8:00 p.m. The Dog and Pony theatre ensemble performs William Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline” at the Round House Theatre (8641 Colesville Rd). Tickets are $15 each.

8:00 p.m. Troika Theater performs Bernard Pomerance’s “The Elephant Man” at the Back Room at Jackie’s (8081 Georgia Ave). Tickets are $18.50 each (excluding food and drinks).

Saturday

9:00 a.m. Silver Spring hosts the weekly Freshfarm farmers market on Ellsworth Drive, between Fenton Street and Georgia Avenue, until 1:00 p.m. There is no admission for this event.

1:00 p.m. Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (8230 Georgia Ave) hosts a talk with art collector Allison Cohen. This event is free and open to the public.

3:00 p.m. Space 88 (8211 Mayor Ln) hosts a reception for Tom Block. The painter’s ongoing public-art project, “Cousins”, appears at the entrance to the Kennett Street parking garage (off Eastern Ave). This event is free and open to the public.

4:00 p.m. Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (8230 Georgia Ave) hosts a talk with art collector Phillip Barlow. This free event is open to the public and precedes a free wine tasting.
