Local Licks: Flash

Flash isn’t a band, though it delivers serious music. And Flash doesn’t perform, though there is a show. Confused? Good.

It’s what event producer Deyv does. The multimedia guru and South Silver Springer confounds the traditional concept of entertainment to create a salon vibe for the 21st century.

Stripped down, Deyv and his Flash event crew scramble tantric electronica with visual elements — designers generating digital graphics that are then projected onto the walls. The whole experience teeters on sensory overload, capturing that split-second thrill of falling weightless.

It’s like bungee jumping in zero gravity, an uninhibited leap into the abyss that’s all elation, no consequence.

That’s nice, Jen. But what’s it sound like?

The event’s musical elements are all trance — primal beats, looping samples and little if any human vocals. One can dance to it if the spin master speeds things up, but it’s meant to induce deep relaxation. Think Swedish massage for the mind.

Sample the sounds of Flash at the event’s MySpace page, then catch the full gig tonight (Apr 18) starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Back Room at Jackie’s (8081 Georgia Ave). Three bucks gets you through the door.

  1. Deyv says:

Thanks for the plug Penguin. Although there wasn’t and will never be a lick of trance played at an 88 event. Electronic music has multiple genres and each month at Flash we’ll be featuring different ones. I hope to have a few podcasts up from the events live DJing at http://www.eightyeightdc.com/88blog in a few days. In the meantime, folks can check out the vibe via Dakota Fine’s pics: http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/caughtintheflash/flash-jackies-backroom-88dc/
