Local Licks: Dauragon C. Mikado

Whiz kid Dauragon C. Mikado likes his electronica pixelated and freaky, like Donkey Kong on a Red Bull rush.

There isn’t much info on Mikado, who was raised on the “mean streets of Silver Spring”. (Could he be this guy?) But he loves that hip hop and chiptunes, and declares his style as “unmistakably 8-bit, but at its core, 100% stone-cold gangsta“.

Or as stone-cold gangsta as an Atari game can get.

Still, Mikado’s experiments with blips and beeps create an interesting, twisted sound. The tune “PixelCore” is twitchy robotica laid down with old-skool beatbox. And “He Fights Alone” is a hypnotic mix of West Coast gangsta and Pac Man.

“Disconnected” is just that — a collection of disjointed beats jumbled together to form a trippy mix. And the song “Crimewave” is Donkey Kong laid down with a techno beat.

Give “Bob Marley’s Greatest Hits” a rest and try Dauragon C. Mikado for a change. Check out his tunes on MySpace and Last.fm.
