How many rock-n-roll influences can one stuff into a 7 Door Sedan? At least eight, says lead singer and ax man Glenn Kowalski.
The Silver Springer (who sometimes operates as Jake Whipp) taps glam rockers T-Rex, Mott the Hoople and David Bowie for some inspiration. But 7 Door Sedan’s sound also comes with a heavy dose of early punk like The Stooges and Lou Reed, plus post-Invasion Kinks, a slight twist of Alice Cooper, and even Roxy Music.
The only thing missing is more cowbell.
The tune “Lost and Found” has a dark guitar sound and vocal style that calls on Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane” groove. It’s gritty yet easy to dance to. “Everything in the World” is more Iggy Pop, with a rolling groove that contorts limbs and pops joints out of alignment.
Meanwhile, “Caught In Between” has a slower, steady rhythm that’s right in line with The Kinks’ “Living on a Thin Line” or “Lola”, and a slinky intro that T Rex’s Marc Bolan would be proud to moan.
Get teased on the band’s MySpace page, then catch 7 Door Sedan live at the Quarry House (8401 Georgia Ave) on Saturday, Jan 25. The gig drops at 9:00 p.m.
