Local Licks: Deepgrave Min Og Dog

Deepgrave Min Og Dog’s electronic sound is just as mysterious, unnerving and alluring as the group’s inexplicable name.

The group (if that’s what it is) got its start in 2001 in an exotic neck of Gaithersburg. Since then, the project has grown “considerably”, though exactly how far they’ve come is a little fuzzy.

DGMOD’s sonic inspirations stretch the electronic spectrum, from prog-rock Moog synthesizers to pounding heartbeats, and even PacMan’s familiar wocka-wocka-wocka.

“New Noise Explosion” is that ringing in the ear when all other sounds are silenced and the lights go out. It’s unsettling and primal on a molecular level, buried deep in the DNA. The remix, “Wanna Begin a New Noise Explosion”, delivers a more recognizable techno beat appropriate for ass shaking.

The project’s “Dark Secrets” also leans more towards music and not just ambient sound. A repetitive, percolating string is reminiscent of the “Knight Rider” theme, while the beat is bhangra. “Hidden Treasure” has that same driving groove.

Hit DGMOD’s free downloads or sample streaming joints on MySpace. Go for the full immersion tonight (Jan 18) at the Mayorga Coffee Factory (8040 Georgia Ave). The 7:30 p.m. gig sets you back $5 to $10.
