County, Penguin release survey results

The ballots have been counted, and it’s official: MoCo residents are amped about their quality of life. Penguin readers, on the other hand, could use a stiff drink.

According to results of the county’s quality-of-life survey, released Tuesday, residents feel good about the state of things. Most of the 917 participating households — 86 percent — said Montgomery County was an “excellent” or “good” place to live.

Emergency services like the fire department, medical responders and the PD received kudos, as did the recycling program, libraries, public schools and colleges, and county parks.

On the flip side, survey participants gave the area’s cable TV providers two thumbs down, along with the county’s code enforcement and land use. The availability of affordable housing, childcare and healthcare were also big issues with participants, as were traffic and pedestrian safety.

“Our government needs to be responsive, service-oriented and user-friendly,” said brand-spanking new council president Mike Knapp. “This survey provides information that will help us focus on the basics.”

Meanwhile, The Penguin has released data from its 2007 Quality of Nightlife survey. The overall theme: booze, and lots of it. Penguin survey participants consistently chose bar service as the most sought-after amenity for theaters, restaurants and music venues.
