The Early Bird

Renting the penguin balloon for Saturday’s Thanksgiving parade would have cost over $1,000. Thankfully, all those tuxedo-clad birds already marching down Georgia Avenue allowed The Penguin marketing team to capitalize on the free advertising.

For parade pics, click here for The Penguin’s photo set. (You can also click on the Flickr ad on the right side of each Penguin page.) Local shutterbug Chip Py also has pics on his Flickr page.

For this week’s work schedule (and there are people who must work this week), check out the itinerary below:

Monday

9:30 a.m. The county council’s education committee gets the full scoop on Montgomery College’s enrollment projections and space deficits. The talk hits Rockville, or catch it live on County Cable 6.

2:00 p.m. The county council’s economic development committee hashes out zoning text amendment 07-10, which could establish an amenity fund in lieu of pocket parks in Silver Spring’s central business district. The discussion goes down in Rockville.

7:00 p.m. Silver Spring’s neighborhoods committee discusses the “Weed and Seed” program to keep the kiddies out of trouble. The meeting hits the Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave) and is open to the public.

Tuesday

11:30 a.m. The full county council votes on zoning text amendment 07-14, which could raise the roof to 200 feet in the Ripley District. The vote hits Rockville and County Cable Montgomery’s website.

7:30 p.m. Silver Spring’s commercial and economic development committee talk about Fenton Village streetscaping, the retail situation in South Silver Spring, and whatever the hell is happening with the future Colesville Road music venue. It all goes down at the Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave), and it’s all open to the public.

Thursday

All day. The county observes Thanksgiving. County offices, libraries, liquor stores and courts are closed. Metro and Ride On operates on a Sunday schedule. At least parking at public lots and meters is free.
