The Early Bird

This week, the kind people at Metro help commuters keep the flu, and that nasty drug-resistant staph crap, at bay.

Monday

4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The transit authority doles out free bottles of hand sanitizer at the Federal Triangle and Fort Totten Metro stations. The alcohol-loaded gel keeps communicable diseases like the flu on ice. It also prevents the spread of drug-resistant staph infections.

7:30 p.m. The MoCo PD demonstrates its speed-cam technology to Silver Spring’s transportation and pedestrian safety committee. The speed trap goes down in front of the Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave).

Tuesday

4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Score more free bottles of hand sanitizer at the Silver Spring and Branch Avenue Metro stations. Shmear it on liberally.

Wednesday

4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Feed that germ phobia with even more free bottles of hand sanitizer, courtesy of the transit authority. Hit the Vienna/Fairfax and Rosslyn stations.

8:00 p.m. Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) talks about the state’s $1.5 billion budget deficit and hints at how he’d like to bridge the gap. The public meeting rocks the Takoma Park Middle School (7611 Piney Branch Rd).

Thursday

1:00 p.m. The county’s planning board mulls over a proposed zoning change that would increase building heights in the Ripley district. If accepted, the zoning change could sweeten the pot for organizations like National Public Radio to move to Silver Spring. The open meeting hits planning board HQ (8787 Georgia Ave).

7:00 p.m. Terry Holzheimer, director of economic development with Arlington County, Va., reveals how Ballston, Clarendon and Arlington’s Columbia Pike got their urban acts together. The discussion rocks planning board HQ (8787 Georgia Ave) and is open to the public.

7:00 p.m. US Rep. Albert Wynn (D-4) feels your pain and hears your gripes at a town-hall meeting. The democracy goes down at the Silver Spring Fire Department’s station (8110 Georgia Ave — that’s the new building, not the future brew hall) and is open to the public.

Will they be done demonstrating the speed cam by 9:30 or so when I’m driving down Georgia Ave? :-)

I would prefer that Metro do more to promote hygiene than just hand out sanitizer. I cringe everytime I see some middle aged man cutting his fingernails on Metro. Hello… this is not your bathroom! Not quite as bad, but also a personal hygiene issue that shouldn’t be on Metro was the woman filing her nails.
