Data from The Penguin’s Quality of Nightlife survey continues to stream into the newsroom. According to the numbers, Penguin readers want to get their bowl on.
Forty-five percent of 275 survey participants said a bowling alley would do downtown Silver Spring some good. Respondents did not allude to what kind of bowling alley would be favored.
Miniature golf was also a hit, scoring 30 percent of all respondents. However, there was no suggestion as to whether the putt-putt should rock the central business district or the Sligo Creek golf course.
One-quarter of survey participants voted for an ice or roller rink, though some comments leaned in favor of the warm-weather option.
“I do not have any personal desire to go ice skating, but would love an old-fashioned roller rink,” Penguin reader Kathy wrote.
“I agree 1,000 percent about the roller rink,” Penguin reader Felicia added. “I have wanted one of those in our neighborhood for years.”
While Penguin reader WeCanDoBetter didn’t show any love for the future Veterans Plaza ice rink, an alternative use was proposed.
“While I am no fan of the proposed ice rink, it would be cool to have those bumper cars that actually operate on ice,” wrote WeCanDoBetter, who learned of them from a recent news report. “I don’t know if the proposed ice rink is big enough to hold the bumper cars, but they looked really fun to operate.”
Kid-oriented entertainment venues didn’t score much love, either. About 3 percent of respondents (7 out of 275) sought a children’s museum for Silver Spring. Six percent of voters (17 people) went for the video arcade.

Boxed wines and rosés are back in vogue. Just ask The Penguin's sommeliers.
I’ve been pushing mini golf and bowling for awhile. We had a bowling alley downtown for years but it’s a gym now. People should support White Oak Lanes before it’s gone.
Sligo — Would you put the mini-golf in the central business district or at the Sligo Creek golf course?
Stop teasing us, Penguin. We want to see the full results.
btw…I remember the old bowling alley where the LA Fitness gym is now located. I had real fun there. Nothing like throwing down a few balls and some cheap pitchers of beer. I really miss that place.
Maybe Lucky Strike can find some property in downtown SS.
Sligo Creek Golf Course, but I’m biased because I live down the street from it.
I wish a Lucky Strike would open at the Walsh Motor Company bldg. (but I still want my donuts)
I want one of those pretentious uptight bowling alleys with a dresscode.. like in gallery place….
… yea, I’m joking. I’m morally opposed to the concept of a bowling alley with a dresscode. Why you ask? BECAUSE IT’S A FRIGGIN BOWLING ALLEY for johovus’ sake!
Candlepin bowling would be pretty cool… there’s not enough of those in the world in general.
