It’s official: The Penguin’s iMac is officially toast. In the meantime, our newsroom staff has retreated to its emergency operations center (the kitchen table) and is running on backup power (the laptop PC).

7:00 p.m. Pound the pavement in a four- to seven-mile fun run. Hook up at Pacers (8535 Fenton St) for the free fitness.
Friday
1:00 p.m. The Autumn Writing Circle shares creative tips with aspiring writers at the Silver Spring Public Library (8901 Colesville Rd). The advice is free. The bruising to your ego will cost you.
6:30 p.m.Space 7:10 at Kefa Cafe (963 Bonifant St) hosts a free reception for teen artists with the Gandhi Brigade, which explores social issues through video.
8:00 p.m. Pregnant nuns, chain-smoking shrinks and fierce drama hit the Silver Spring Stage (10145 Colesville Rd) with ”Agnes of God”. Tickets set you back $15 to $18.
8:00 p.m. The Blair Mansion Inn (7711 Eastern Ave) cooks up comedy in “Which Blair Project?”. The dinner theater program costs $55 and includes a meal.
Saturday
9:00 a.m. Pumpkins are in season, but don’t sweat it: apple croissants are still available at the Ellsworth Drive farmers market. Hit it before 1:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m. The Silver Spring Library (8901 Colesville Rd) holds its annual book fest until 3:00 p.m. The entertainment is free. The book sale will cost you, though not much.
6:00 p.m. Check out the totally refurbished gallery at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center (8230 Georgia Ave), which hosts a free reception for artists Roberto Mannino, Michelle Samour, Peter Sowiski and Lynn Sures until 8:30 p.m.
