Double-dipping cops to resign

Seven police officers accused of simultaneously shafting the PD and a private security firm have agreed to resign, The Washington Post reports.

Kyle Cochran, a patrol officer at the Silver Spring police station, will plead guilty to misconduct in office, a misdemeanor, and will pay about $7,100 in restitution to the county, The Post writes.

He and 13 other cops were accused of working police shifts that overlapped with their moonlighting gigs as private security guards. Four other officers have copped guilty pleas to the same charge. Two more sealed deals to avoid criminal charges, defense attorneys told The Post.

However, James Redd, who also worked out of the Silver Spring station, is holding out. Prosecutors believe Redd pulled in $24,000 over six years of double dipping, a felony. Redd’s attorney blamed sloppy record keeping for the discrepancy in pay, The Post reports.

Moonlighting cops are common in Montgomery County, where the cost of living has outpaced increases in police wages. Security jobs can bag up to $50 an hour, says The Post.
