The Early Bird

Make that morning cup of joe a venti, or whatever “large” is. It’s freakin’ chilly outside!

Once you’ve got the blood flowing again to those extremities, check out what’s going on this week:

Throughout the week. The Penguin’s quality of nightlife survey rocks its second week. Please fill out the questionnaire (if you haven’t done so already), and let your neighbors and coworkers know about it. The more, the merrier!

Monday. Silver Spring’s neighborhoods committee discusses gang activity in the area. The talk drops at 7:00 p.m. at the Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave). The gig is open to the public.

Tuesday. The Long Branch advisory committee hooks up for its monthly meeting. The 7:00 p.m. shindig hits the Long Branch Community Center (8700 Piney Branch Rd) and is open to the public.

Tuesday. Friends of the Silver Spring Public Library discuss “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom” by T.E. Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia). The free talk starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Public Library (8901 Colesville Rd).

Wednesday. Silver Spring’s commercial and economic development committee gets updates on two area projects: one at Falkland Chase’s north parcel, and South Silver Spring’s Galaxy development. The details hit at 7:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave). The gig is open to the public.

Thursday. Play hooky and hit Annapolis area gardens with “Washington Gardener” editor Kathy Jentz. The charter bus rolls from the Silver Spring Metro station at 9:00 a.m. and gets you back at around 3:00 p.m. Call (703) 395-1501 for more information.

Thursday. County council’s transportation and environment committee gets a status report on the proposed road code, which would reduce lane widths through urban areas. The meeting is open to the public and hits Rockville at 10:00 a.m.

Thursday. County council’s public safety committee gets an update on crime and traffic enforcement, including the efficacy of red-light cameras and other speed traps. The gig is open to the public and drops at 10:30 a.m. in Rockville.

Thursday. State senator and law scholar Jamie Raskin (D-20) discusses constitutional patriotism. Freedom rings at 11:00 a.m. at Montgomery College (7600 Takoma Ave), room 204. Just like this great nation, the gig is free.

Thursday. Silver Spring’s urban district advisory committee talks shop at Discovery Communications (1 Discovery Pl). The 3:30 p.m. meeting is open to the public.

I’ve always wondered… What do the people on the SS advisory board do for a living that they hold these 3:30 meetings? And how do I go about getting job like theirs :-)

  2. The 3:30 meeting is for the urban district advisory committee, which is actually separate from the Silver Spring advisory board.

Two of the urban district advisory committee’s members work for developers, while two more represent small businesses. Time spent at these meetings is probably considered part of community outreach for these companies.

I don’t know what any of the resident members do (or don’t do) for a living.

I bet ALL of these members ask the same question of me that you ask of them: What does this woman do for a living that she can be at a 3:30 meeting?

Click here for more info on who sits on the committee.

I used to really like the MoCo Web site for keeping up with development news, but for the past year or so, it has gone WAY downhill. For example, if you look at the page the Penguin referenced for who sits on the committee, you’ll see that the minutes/agenda, etc. haven’t been added for all of 2007! The same goes for MNCPCC page on Silver Spring developments. Some of those project pages haven’t been updated in a year, even though there is ample new news on a significant number of those projects. I guess like a lot of us, the people who are responsible for updating the Web sites also have other full time jobs and this stuff just falls by the wayside.
