The Early Bird

The Metro station’s south gate creaks open today, debunking yet another excuse for tardiness in The Penguin newsroom.

If you used the newly opened station entrance (on the southeast side of Colesville Road, next to NOAA headquarters), The Penguin would like to hear from you. Did it meet your expectations? Did it have that new turnstile smell? Holler back.

Otherwise, here’s what’s kicking this week in Silver Spring:

Monday. MoCo public schools open for business. Keep an eye out for kid crossings and bus stops.

Monday. Silver Spring’s transportation and pedestrian safety committee chews the fat at the Silver Spring Regional Center (8435 Georgia Ave). The deal drops at 7:30 p.m.

It’s great that they opened that entrance… but was it really worth $300,000!

It caught me by surprise this morning, a welcomed change to my Monday routine. I do have a mixed reaction though. I was pleased that construction of the new entrance did not result in the removal of the trees immediately before the gate. However I was disappointed that the new entrance only has 3 turnstiles. Maybe it won’t be as busy I think it will.

I don’t remember the fencing used to funnel entering customers to the turnstiles. I do remember thinking about free metro rides.

Seeing the final result makes me wonder about the $500,000 cost.

How do we convince the Express guy to stand at the new entrance?

Woo hoo!! so happy about this. I must say that I’ll feel better/safer when I ride the metro at night to use this exit rather than the other one– I just don’t like having to walk through the (former) penguin mural tunnel. Ditto on convincing an Express guy to stand at the new entrance.

Whatever happened to the penguin mural, anyways? Seemed like Silver Spring had this awesome penguin vibe, then they all just up and disappeared.

  5. Thanks for your question, DMZ.

The penguin mural underwent rehab for damage to a couple of panels. It won’t return until construction on the transit center is complete.

As for all who want the Express dudes posted at the Metro’s south entrance, I get the feeling they’ll figure it out soon enough.

It’s all about the North End, baby!

    btw…I liked the Penguins.

This is a great improvement to the Silver Spring Metro station. Of course it had to happen a month after I moved to the other side of the station. I lived on the East-West side for 5 years and now they open an entrance! This new entrance should protect women from countless sexually harassing comments from our friends under the bridge. That may be the number one reason why I moved.
