Too much chlorine in a health club pool sent up to six people to the hospital and briefly shut down Cameron Street Wednesday morning.
Sometime before 10:30 a.m., the MoCo fire and rescue service responded to an “overchlorination” incident at L.A. Fitness, the 7-month-old health club at 8616 Cameron Street.
Third-district police officer Orpheus Pierce, who held auto traffic at bey outside the club, said a busted pump may have introduced excess chlorine into the pool’s water. Chlorine has a strong odor at room temperature and can irritate the eyes and throat.
Six people at the health club were sent to the hospital for observation only, said MoCo fire and rescue Capt Brian Hagberg, who was on the scene with rescue personnel. There were no serious injuries.
However, The Gazette reports four people were hospitalized, two with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The info is attributed to a MoCo fire and rescue spokesperson.
The L.A. Fitness health club sits on Cameron Street, between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street. It’s unclear whether the club was open for business during or after the incident.
By 10:30 a.m., a handful of employees were working the front desk, while firefighters wheeled a heavy-duty electric fan back to their truck. Club employees had no comment regarding the incident.
A stretch of Cameron Street was closed temporarily while emergency personnel worked the scene. The street has since been reopened to traffic.

When was this? I was by there at 10:45 and nobody was around.
The fumes must have been phoned in before 10:30 a.m., which is when I got there. The fire fighters were just wrapping up, and the street was reopened by then.
