This Weekend

On Friday night, I’ve got a date with a guy named Jason. He’s the strong but silent type.

Where shall we go? What shall we do? Decisions, decisions.

Thursday

7:00 p.m. Patrick Alban and Noche Latina kick out Buena Vista-inspired beats at Silver Plaza on Ellsworth Drive.

Friday

6:00 p.m. Print artists Nancy McNamara, Marie Defeche and Maureen Feely-Kohl explore the status of women in “3 Roads Traveled”. The art exhibit and free reception drops at Gateway’s Heliport Gallery (8001 Kennett St).

6:30 p.m. Photographer Nancy Coviello shows off images of Italy at Kefa Cafe’s Space 7:10 (963 Bonifant St). The opening reception is free. The iced caramel latte in your cup will cost you.

10:00 p.m. and midnight. Jason’s back … again! The 1980’s slasher classic “Friday the 13th” rolls at the AFI Silver Theatre (8633 Colesville Rd). Tickets are $9.75 ($8.50 for AFI members, seniors, or if you’re packing student ID) B.Y.O. hockey mask or win one cast from the prop master’s original mold.

Saturday

9:00 a.m. This week, try the apple croissants at the Ellsworth Drive farmers market. They’re good eats, but they go back to the farm at 1:00 p.m.

12:00 p.m. Local artists sell their stuff at South Silver Spring’s artists market. The wheeling and dealing goes down at the Arts Alley (next to 8040 Georgia Ave) until 5:00 p.m. (Update: This event has been cancelled. — JD, Jul 14, 2007)

6:30 p.m. The Chris Polk Band cranks up the blues at Silver Plaza on Ellsworth Drive.

Sunday

12:00 p.m. The artists market moves to the Wayne Avenue plaza (in front of 8435 Georgia Ave). Score some local art until 5:00 p.m. (Update: This event has been cancelled. — JD, Jul 14, 2007)

  1. David Zakar says:

Definitely looking forward to the artists’ market – I never seem to make it down to Arts Alley, for whatever reason, and we’re always in the market for a nice print.

We just tried to go to the artist market. There were signs, but nothing was there. Were we in the wrong place? I thought it was that alley behind Mayorga.

  3. I just spoke with Brenda Smoak, who runs Alchemy and organizes the weekly outdoor markets at Arts Alley and Wayne Avenue plaza (at Georgia Avenue).

Business has been rough at both markets, with high heat and few customers. As a result, the markets have been cancelled for now.

The good news: The market may move to Ellsworth Drive in downtown Silver Spring. Smoak said she hoped to work something out with the Silver Spring Regional Center.

Keep your fingers crossed, art fans!

    Thanks for the info.

Perhaps she should take the signs down, then? We stopped to have ice cream at Moorenko and saw that we were not the only people wandering into the alley, apparently looking for something that wasn’t there.
