Car thieves nabbed after Indian Spring chase

Four suspected car thieves were busted in Silver Spring after flipping over in their stolen rides, police say.

According to a press statement, at least four men were rolling in two hot Honda Accords near Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street late Sunday night. The Hondas were stolen from Prince George’s County.

When third-district police officers tried to stop the cars at Colesville Road and Ellsworth Drive, the drivers tore ass. One Honda rammed a squad car twice before flipping over, the police say. The occupants of that car were taken into custody.

The other Honda tried to dodge police and sped north on Colesville Road. That car also flipped, and its occupants taken into custody, says the press statement.

Four of the suspects were identified: Justin Lazenby, 23, of Colmar Manor; Derek Barnes, 19, of Riverdale; Duran West, 19, and Robert Cook, 26, both of no fixed address. Two more people were taken into custody and may face charges.

One officer sustained minor injuries during the bust. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

I think there is an error in the story. The story says “Colesville and Ellsworth” but the map shows Colesville and Franklin. I assume the map is correct since Colesville and Ellsworth do not intersect.

  2. Thanks for the observation, Bob.

According to the police press release, the cops tried to stop the suspected thieves at Colesville Rd and Ellsworth Ave.

Google Maps couldn’t find Ellsworth Ave, but it did find a spot where Ellsworth Dr runs into Franklin Ave near Colesville Rd. (If you zoom the map, you’ll see that the three streets meet at a tiny traffic triangle.)

    Hope this clears things up.

You are right! There is a one block segment of Ellsworth Drive that runs from Hamilton Avenue to Franklin Avenue. I hadn’t known there was any of Ellsworth north/east of Sligo Creek. The Ellsworth name doesn’t show up on the Google map unless you zoom in on the map. From the satellite view it looks like there are no houses facing that block.
