The Watercooler

Apparently, the beer-and-pizza set doesn’t wake until after sunset.

At 2:00 p.m., halfway through Saturday’s Heritage Montgomery celebration at Silver Spring’s old firehouse (above), there was still plenty of cold pizza left. And though the Hook and Ladder keg was tapped, there wasn’t much beer flowing.

At least Jeremy Gruber, co-owner of the future Hook and Ladder Brewhouse, was around to give The Penguin an update on renovations at the 1914 firehouse.

Construction could start in four to six weeks, depending on what architects have to say about the place, Gruber said. The verdict on where to place certain elements — the massive beer vats, for example — is still out. However, Gruber still expects the brewhouse to open next spring.

And what about the brass fire pole? A notch on the floor marked where the pole once connected the second-floor dormitory with the ground-floor garage. But would the pole return?

Yes, Gruber said, though the architects have yet to decide where to place that, too.

Meanwhile at the B&O rail station, dinosaurs had taken over the model-train display. At least two plastic brontosauri, each about two inches long, threatened to crush mini-freight trains. And one T rex tore at a tiny tree.

At least a scale model of Georgia Avenue (above, right) was spared the prehistoric predators.

The cold pizza was ok, but Miles Spicer of MSG was wonderful entertainment. Very enjoyable. I hope that this is the type of music the Hook and Ladder will invite back. The brew pub will be a welcomed addition to Silver Spring, although I’m a little worried about the H&L thongs!

The one sight at the B&O on Saturday worth a comment, was a 8-9 year old giving instructions to a younger child on how to use a rotary telephone. He got some of it right. They were both amazed at the gizmo!
