Attention leadfeet and speed demons: The citations start today for drivers who tear through residential areas and school zones, according to a county press statement.
The automated Safe Speed program dispensed only warnings while signs marking enforcement zones were posted. Now, drivers caught on camera doing 10 mph over the posted speed limit could get a $40 fine.
No points would be deducted from drivers’ licenses, the county says.
Van-mounted mobile cameras are posted in Rockville, but Silver Spring can expect stationary cameras on Wayne Avenue, Piney Branch Road and points north of the Beltway. Takoma Park police also will use automated cameras beginning this summer. (Click here for more locations.)
