Police extends warning period for speeders

The county’s automated speed-enforcement program is extending its grace period indefinitely for drivers who speed through residential neighborhoods.

In a press statement, the county police department says it will issue only warnings to speeders nabbed by its mobile cameras. The warning period would have expired today, but county and city of Rockville police departments say they need more time to post signs marking enforcement zones.

“The departments want to make sure the public is fully informed about where the technology is deployed before the first actual citations are issued,” reads the press statement.

The Safe Speed program, announced in March, uses mobile cameras to catch drivers who speed along residential streets and school zones. Drivers who go 10 mph over the posted speed limit could get a $40 fine but no points deducted from their drivers’ licenses.

Mobile cameras are being tested in Rockville, but Silver Spring can expect stationary cameras on Wayne Avenue, Piney Branch Road and points north of the Beltway. Takoma Park police also will use automated cameras beginning this summer. (Click here for more locations.)

Any new information on the locations or start date of the speeding cameras? I thought I heard on the news last night that they were starting to issue citations today. If they’re putting up signs, I haven’t seen one on Piney Branch or Wayne Avenue (I frequent those streets almost daily). Also, the map on the county website is pretty vague. Is there a map of the specific locations?
One more thing, do you have any information about which lawmaker we can discuss this issue with? Any and all information you have would be appreciated! Thanks!

  2. I heard something about the end of speed-camera amnesty, too. However, I’m not sure if that goes for the entire county or just the city of Rockville. When in doubt, assume that Big Brother is watching and waiting to write you a ticket.

You may wish to contact your local MoCo police station for the cameras’ specific locations.

Since this is a county program, you can contact your county councilmember or the municipal governments of Rockville, Gaithersburg or Takoma Park.

    Good luck, K.
