Back in the day, there was Laser Floyd. The local planetarium would stay open late on a Friday night, blast “Dark Side of the Moon” into the darkness, and shoot laser beams across the ceiling.
Now, we have Arthur Loves Plastic. The Silver Spring-based “remix master” hosts a CD release party at the Montgomery College planetarium on Saturday.
Arthur Loves Plastic (actually, Bahamian-born Bev Stanton) swirls techno beats with psychadelic ambient melodies and haunting vocals. In “Free,” Stanton collaborates with folk singer Lisa Moscatiello to spin a soulful anthem to irreverence.
The song “Women Alone” crunches with an industrial downbeat and spoken-word vocals, while “Empty PhilHarmonic” confounds the ear with a taunting, disjointed melody.
Stanton’s website offers soundbites from her new CD, “Beneath the Watchful Eyes,” plus samples of her earlier works. The website also has streaming audio of Stanton’s remixes.
Get a taste, then hit the planetarium for more Arthur Loves Plastic. The party drops at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. Refreshments won’t be served, so handle your business before the show.
