Pizza chain to shed trans fat

Manny & Olga’s Pizza, a DC-area franchise, announced yesterday that it would eliminate trans fat from its kitchens.

In a press statement, the company said it was testing oils without trans fat, and that all of its menu items eventually would be trans fat-free.

Trans fat is believed to raise “bad” (LDL) cholesterol levels while lowering “good” (HDL) cholesterol levels, which may lead to heart disease and stroke.

The pizza chain’s announcement came on the same day that county councilmember Duchy Trachtenberg (D-At large) introduced a bill to ban trans fat from restaurants throughout Montgomery County.

Manny & Olga’s operates four pizzerias in the county, with one in Fenton Village.

What? No trans-fat?! Sorry, I couldn’t accurately read your article over the sound of my jaw eating a gigantic regular slice. All goey. Yum.
