Clear your schedules, people. There’s something for everyone this weekend in Silver Spring. Like the arts? Got that. Like science? Got that. Like ax-wielding psycho dads and haunted hotels? Yep, got that, too.
Tonight, the AFI Silver Theatre (8633 Colesville Rd) kicks off a month of Stanley Kubrick films with “The Shining” (above), his creepy interpretation of a Stephen King novel. Also this weekend, “Spartacus” (the original “Gladiator”) takes the screen.
No Kubrick collection would be complete without “2001: A Space Odyssey,” the comedy “Dr. Strangelove,” and the ultra-violent “A Clockwork Orange.” Those flicks roll in February.
On Saturday, Class Acts Arts presents Sduduzo-KaMbili’s “Juxtapower!” The showcase of South African music and dance goes down at the Woodside United Methodist Church (8900 Georgia Ave) at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 each.
Also on Saturday, astronomists with the Montgomery College planetarium explain how stars are born. (Spoiler alert: There is no “star stork.”) The free show starts at 7:00 p.m. on the Silver Spring-Takoma Park campus.
Finally, on Sunday, AFI Silver Theatre rolls “Looking for Richard.” The 1996 documentary was directed by Al Pacino and is part of the area’s “Shakespeare in Washington” celebration. The 4:30 p.m. screening includes conversation with Michael Kahn, artistic director of the Shakespeare Theatre Company. Tickets will run you $9.25 ($7.50 if you’re packing AFI membership).
