Crime creeps up in Silver Spring

A few more Silver Springers had their pockets picked, their wallets snatched and their asses kicked so far this year than in 2005, according to new numbers crunched by the MoCo PD.

Robberies jumped since the same time last year by 26 percent in District 3, the PD reports. That district includes Woodside, Long Branch and downtown, east and south Silver Spring. In the second district–which includes Lyttonsville, Rosemary Hills and areas along Rock Creek–robbery was up by 7 percent. (View a map of the districts.) By definition, robbery involves violence or the threat of it.

Larceny–stuff like shoplifting, pocket picking and fraud–crept up by 12 percent in the third district but nudged by less than 1 percent in District 2. Rates of assault with a weapon increased by 7 percent in the third district but remained steady in the second district, the PD says.

Burglars found tasty pickings in District 2, where there was a 24 percent increase reported. However, the PD found that burglars weren’t so interested in District 3, which showed no increase from last year.

There were 33 percent fewer rapes reported in both districts compared with 2005, say the cops. Meanwhile, this year’s murder rates in each district remained at two deaths between January and September.

The entire county experienced a 7 percent increase in overall crime, the PD reports.
