Bombay Gaylord

Just south of downtown and west of Mumbai, Bombay Gaylord serves decent tandoori, tempered curries and a lunch buffet. Oh yeah, and 22-ounce bottles of Taj Mahal beer.

Don’t let its dumpy exterior and cheap verticle blinds scare you. The food at Bombay Gaylord really isn’t that bad. The tandoori platter ($11.95) is good eats, with moist pieces of grilled chicken, shrimp, lamb and kofta (beef and lamb patties), all with hints of cinammon and cardamom.

Their butter chicken ($9.95) is an indulgence, combining curry with rich cream and clarified butter. It’s the chocolate-frosted, custard-filled Krispy Kreme of Indian cuisine. Scoop it up with warm garlic naan bread (keyword: garlic) or use it to smother the inexplicably greasy basmati rice.

The saag paneer (spinach with fried cheese cubes, $7.95) and chicken palak (dark meat with spinach, $9.75) are runnier than the standard-operational mush of a creamed spinach. The spices are tempered but not muted completely. Warning: A request to turn up the heat results in a tart, Tabasco-like sting that collides with the clove, cumin and nutmeg.

Bombay Gaylord’s large dining room is opium-den mellow, with subdued lighting and sitar sounds to set the mood. The smaller dining room serves as the restaurant’s main entrance and can get hectic when the lunch buffet or takeout business gets cooking. Service is generally brisk and prices are good and cheap.

I’ll have to take your word on the “Sunday night take-away” claim.

Bombay Gaylord’s food is descent, but the place is a dump! Why don’t they put some of the money they’re making (crowds are usually good, even early in the evening) into some fixup? But then, there are people who protest that SS has become “sterile” and “too Disney,” with all the focus on modern, clean eateries.
